The Benefit of Ginger

Ginger has been long used for a medical and culinary purpose. It gives our body a lot of benefits such as reducing nausea, inflammation, relieve gastrointestinal, and the most common used is to keep the cold away.

Since it’s been a rainy days here in Indonesia, we’re going to introduce our new product “Ginger Candy” but first. Let’s get to know the main ingredient first : the Red Ginger. What’s Red Ginger?

Same with the regular ginger, red ginger the same kind of benefits for human body, but it has a redish color on and spicier taste.

Ginger closely related to turmeric, cordomon, and galangal.

One of the most powerful thing found in ginger is : Gingerol

Gingerol : a bioactive compound in ginger, responsible for much of its medicinal properties. It has a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioaxidant effects.

Some of the benefits of ginger for our body :

  • Cold

    Imagine yourself having a sweet warm ginger tea on a cold rainy afternoon. Hmm… Isn’t super nice? Ginger keeps your body warm. It is diaphoretic, means it promotes sweating, makes the body warm from within.

  • Nausea

    Ginger has been proven to reduce a lot of kinds of nause : morning sickness, sea sickness, nausea and vomiting after surgery, and in cancer patients undergoing chemotheray.
    Based on a study, consuming 1-1.5 grams everyday can help reducing morning sickness. But talk to your doctor before taking large amounts of ginger if you are pregnant. Some believe that large amounts can raise the risk of miscarriage (but there are currently no studies to support this)

  • Menstruation cramp

    Menstrual pain (dysesmenorrhea) refers to pain felt during a woman’s menstrual cycle. ginger is pain reliefer, study said that 1 gram of ginger powder per day for the first 3 days of the menstrual cycle.

  • Muscle pain and soreness

    Ginger has anti-inflammatory. In one study, consuming 2 grams of ginger per day for 11 days significantly reduced muscle pain in people performing elbow exercises.

  • Osteoarthritis (joint pain and stiffness)

    Combination of ginger, mastic, cinnamon, and sesame oil, can reduce pain and stiffness in osteoarthirts patiets when applied topically.

  • Digestion

    Chronic indigestion (dyspepsia) is characterized by recurrent pain and discomfort in the upper part of the stomach because ofthe delayed in emptying of the stomach.
    Ginger has been shown to speed up emptying of the stomach.
    Consuming 1.2 grams of ginger powder before a meal accelerated emptying of the stomach by 50%.

  • Cholesterol levels

    High leves of LDL (lipoproteins : the bad colestrol) are linked to an increased risk of heart disease. 3 grams of ginger powder per day can help lower the LDL leves.
    This is supported by a study in hypothyroid rats, where ginger extract lowered LDL cholesterol to a similar extent as the cholesterol-lowering drug atorvastatin. Both studies also showed reductions in total cholesterol and blood triglycerides.

  • Prevent cancer

    The anti-cancer properties are attributed to 6-gingerol. Consume 2 grams of ginger extract per day.

  • Infections

    Ginger extract can inhibit the growth of many different types of bacteria. It’s also effective againts the oral bateria linked to inflammatory diseases in the gums (gingivitis and periodontitis). Ginger also found to be effective against the RSV virus (common cause of resiratory infections).
